| Joined on a whim, to make sure I was getting my daily value of Random. This place looks interesting though, and I think I'll stick around for a while. As for myself, I'm on the line between INTP and ISTP, showing up as the former much more commonly. It was the other way around some two years ago, and it's been an interesting ride since. Oh, and I've just recently turned 18, so you've got an idea of the relevant life stage. One of the things I list as a probable consequence of being near that dividing line is that ideas occasionally have weight and shape (usually quite odd ones to interface properly with the other ideas), and nearly everything internal has some kind of visual representation. There's the usual social problems, etc, etc. I don't see the function of small talk, and am in search of a decent analysis/explanation. What do I care abut the weather when neither I nor the other person(s) plan to spend time outside? Another part of the above is caused by the fact that I can either look at someone or listen to them and if they've something relevant to say, I know which I'd rather do. This can apparently lead to the occasional perception that I'm not on the level, which is annoying since it isn't something I can readily control. I'm exceedingly fond of books, in particular science fiction and most of its sub-genre. Likewise strategy games (Sid Meiers' Alpha Centauri, anyone?) and the visual arts. That last I've taken far enough that it merits its own website. 'http://www.users.qwest.net/~lhhw/'. Like so much of my work, it's got the bare minimum to function, all of which is nicely provided by the server so I can keep myself busy providing content. One of these days it will have a front end; just as soon as I get around to thinking the problem interesting. There was something else I wanted to mention.. Ah yes, the random. You may or may not get to know it well. Would you like an octopus with that? |

| So how is the weather at your place? |
| Posted by: Jkrs Jun 10 2004, 07:27 AM |
| *grins* Absolutely brutal. Hot, dry, and reputedly sunny 350 days of the year. It's quite a good reason to stay indoors, doing things like wander around the internet. What's it like over there? Function 1: Gives a chance to complain at other people. This might not work in person, save for understudies to Captain Obvious. Function 2: Now that I think about it, it fills those pauses in an in-person conversation that some people appear to find akward. That makes the next question 'Why do they seem akward?'. |

| Oh, gosh, it can't compare to hot and humid 365 days of the year. Wet or dry, it's always humid. Unbearably humid. Sweltering hot or gushing wet. Sorry. Had to insert that bit of irrelevant detail. It's the unintentional conversation topic here. Where are you from? |
| Posted by: NGene Jun 10 2004, 01:35 PM |
| *awkward pause* Every conversation must have those. |

| Drybonesdancing: Perfectly alright; it gives me a test conversation to pick apart. The current location is southern Arizona, less than a days' drive from the border with Mexico. They tell you it's a dry heat, and it more or less is, but for the second half of the summer. Then it's monsoon season and anyone with only a swamp cooler is sunk. At that time of year, it sounds a bit like wherever you are. NGene: *pauses akwardly* ... Um.. Ah... Yes, yes they do. Otherwise no one else would get the chance to fit a word in edgewise. |

| Haha so the weather can be an interesting topic after all. Over here there's no such thing as change. I'm in Singapore. Just one or two latitudes above the equator. |

| Perhaps, and I do like to complain. We're also talking about talking about the weather, which is interesting in itself. Sinapore. Heh. Is English your first language? |
| Posted by: drybonesdancing Jun 11 2004, 09:08 PM |
| ah. That reminds me of how i think about what i'm thinking about or even how i think about what i feel. It's the classic Five. Watching oneself. It's 5am here and i'm tired from a confrontation today (emotional encounters are exhausting for me, i use up a lot of energy 'emoting' and lots more analysing it afterwards). However i can't sleep and i can't read either because my brain's on low... so back i am here taking refuge in this array of windows to the outside world whilst remaining in the comfort and quiet of my own room. Come to think of it, you don't normally hear older people saying that they like to complain. Haha, i wonder if complaining is a teenage syndrome. Yes english is the first language. Well i'm glad you didn't ask where it was. Then again i did make mention of it's location on the world map so that would have cancelled out any possibilities of it being somewhere in Japan. |

| I live on the southern coast of California. Weather is so great I take it for granted, save a few hot nights and chilly mornings. I have dificulty comprehending how people survive in sub-freezing areas, heat I can handle as long as I'm not too active. It rains about 1-4 inches a year here, so when it does rain its pretty exciting! Akward silences are akward because it implies the two parties are too absent minded or stupid to think of anything to say. Whether or not you feel that way is entirely up to you! Its really a matter of self-conciousness. I've come to notice intps are less self-concious than the average introvert because of their tendency to detach. |

| More Arizona Hi there. I swear I wouldn't want to be in your shoes, I absolutely hate high temperatures. What is wrong with discussing the weather when we are in such different places..? Anyways... welcome on the board, Jkrs... (You know this strange situation you get to be in when you think that welcoming people will sound fake but you actually are happy to see them...? Anyone gets it? Should I shut up and stop scaring the new people away? |

I got that feeling when I said to Tim that I will miss him in his Leave of Absence thread |

| drybonesdancing: Likewise. I'm 5w6, and I guess it carries over. As to enjoying complaining being only a teenage thing, I'd tend to doubt it. Many do, from how vocal they are, but would probably die before admitting it. *holds up an atlas* I've not seen this world map you mention, but I have one of my own. All I knew at the time you mentioned it was that it was somewhere in the vicinity of Indonesia. flan2dave: Akward silences: I hadn't thought of that. Thanks. Why do you ascribe the lack of self-consciousness to the ability to detach oneself? Vagabond: I can't stand the temperatures either, which is why I'll be relocating to Ohio in a few weeks. One of the reasons I'm so active here is to procrastinate having to pack. Talking about the weather has the potential to be interesting here because we're all so distant from one another. I'm primarily trying to understand why people talk about the weather in person, when it's obvious (and the same) for both and not relevant to anything either one's doing. From what I've noticed, greetings and such can sound fake because they're so simple, which lets them slide nearer to cliche. If you give a reply in detail as you've done, it does suggest that you're genuinely interested rather than just some automated greeting card. ;> |

| If you are detached from the situation, what would you be self-concious about? Usually those who are shy have a tendency to personalize everything that is going on, self-criticizing themselves so much that they can't think about anything else. Detachment suggests the situation can have no affect on you. Maybe you might be self-concious about other things. |

Come to the EIDB and you'll see that complaining is far from a teenage thing. The percentage of teenagers there is lower than here, I think, but you wouldn't tell by the maturity level of some board conversations. Bitching is a Great American Pastime, moreso than baseball. (Note that even baseball players have taken up bitching.) |

Like the paper one's handing in late still being two pages of BS? Makes sense.
And one where being uncoordinated can help your case. It probably counts as a game if you subject it to transactional analysis (a'la http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0345410033/qid=1087131451/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-0981978-4305739?v=glance&s=books). Yes, I have minimal content this morning. It's what comes of not sleeping the night before. |

Yeah that's true. Maybe we only learn to disguise as we grow older.
Haha yes. It's a small island off the tip Peninsular Malaysia. Indonesia's nearby.
Oh cool. Will get hold of it soon. like real soon. |

It's a bit dated in places (was written before homosexuality was removed from the DSM, for instance) but generally sound - to the extent that I can watch some of the items he describes happening in various social organisations. |

| Update: I'm moving to Ohio tomorrow to facilitate sponging off the other half of my family while going to college. I'll be offline for as much as two weeks while straightening out the cable (wheee, broadband!) access issues. |

| Update: That was much easier than I expected. I've arranged intermittent acess by simply moving the modem around when it's not otherwise in use. Working on a wireless LAN inside the next couple of weeks. |
