This is pretty straightforward. I'm interested in hearing about your musical tastes, so go ahead... biggrin.gif

If you have any special favorite songs, it would be nice to know what they are and why they're so special to you.

That opens an awfully large worm can. I have a lot of cans of worms, but that one's a whopper. They say you should store what your family will eat...

Sorry. It's hard to narrow it down, and I always seem to forget some. I'll take a stab at it.

Mission, by Rush - It talks of artistic inspiration, and usually gets me going artistically when I'm in a slump. This, in spite of the fact that the line, "A spirit with a vision is a dream with a mission," which is repeated in the song, seems to me to be too general to mean anything.

Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, by Bach - I don't know the words but I'm sure it's in keeping with my beliefs, so that's clear. However, it's the music of it that speaks to me. You'll find within it a musical form of that swirl motif thingie we have found to appeal to me. Gotta wonder what the deal is with that.

I'm Alive, by E.L.O - I don't know. I guess it's obvious; as a sensation-seeking HSP, I can find just sitting and being aware of being alive to be intoxicating. There is just something about E.L.O. that seems to carry me off. Consequently, I avoid it except when I am up to the experience. There are certain groups that have that ability and I use them cautiously. There always seems to be a seductive quality to the music itself, not in a sexy way but just something that draws me uncannily. It makes me edgy in the daytime. Anyway, this is as E.L.O. as it gets.

Looking for Space, by John Denver - Another philosophical life song with swelling music, but not common. I don't thrill every time someone sings a little louder, but music can swell to effect and Denver made it work. It's the awareness of both highs and lows in the song that makes it really mean something to me. I listened to it while taking long drives at a time when I had anxiety attacks and was wondering how much longer I could stand it. I knew I'd never take my own life, but had my husband know I had even imagined driving the car off a high hill, he'd have taken my keys and hidden them. Listening to this song helped me throw off the desire, somehow.

There's too many more, but I will sum up that Cat Stevens, Rush, Sting, and Simon and Garfunkel have all done several songs that have meaning to me, and I think of them as the thinking musicians. There may be others, but those are the ones I came up with just now. I like a lot of other groups and styles.

Gee, I can't believe you found the ONE and ONLY question I simply cannot answer in here biggrin.gif I mostly listen to greek music, so it would be pointless to mention. But even if I try to narrow it down to what kind of music I listen to, this would make a huge, huge post... practically everything. I am more into rock, but then again into soft music as well, also some metal... electronic music fascinates me, but it is not my first choice whan I want a nice evening with musical backround... for some strange reason though, as far as greek music is concerned - which is what i basically listen to, I have the tendency to prefer somewhat strange and non-mainstream artists and songs. And I don't do it on purpose, I promise... tongue.gif ph34r.gif

Alanis Morrisette is my current favorite musical artist for her creativity and excellence (as I perceive it) and skill at emotional expression. Then there's Enya if I need that gentle kind of mood.

I've practiced piano since age 5, and I enjoy playing Chopin, Mozart, and various modern pieces. Not so much Bach with his highly calculated works, though, because my INFP side craves more emotional exploration.

I can't stand rap. Most pop is boring. Rock is good, but not if it's too heavy. As an HSP myself, I get overstimulated easily unless I'm in the right mood. Thus much of the modern popular rock in USA here is too harsh and nerve-wracking.

Piano improvisation is also enjoyable ^_^ It helps vent teenage frustrations (testosterone?=P) and channel mood swings, as well as being a fun intellectual challenge.

My musical tastes vary by day, mood and according to what I'm doing. Here are a few that frequently end up in the stereo:

Tool and A Perfect Circle -- for their precision and rhythmic excellence.

Bob Dylan -- a lyricist like no other, I love the loose folksy feel to his music and his unique voice.

Led Zeppelin -- because they are Led Zeppelin.

Muddy Waters -- I usually listen to Muddy on the same days that I open all the windows to air out the house... hmmm...

Jesse Cook -- beautiful music, I think they technically refer to it as the "new flamenco". Don't let the album covers run you off!! Jesse and the musicians he enlists obviously love music and a variety of musical instruments.

I seem to go through musical phases every few months, too. I could easily migrate into a Traffic, PJ Harvey, Miles Davis, St. Germain kind of a phase within the week. smile.gif

Chopin is my very favorite to play!!

I listen to a huge variety of music.
I really like progresive rock, stuff like old genesis, yes, rush, king crimson...
I also listen to a lot of metal, the evil satanic black metal stuff, that often makes me laugh.
Lots of classical, love Bach, love baroque and just before that period of music, some modern as well
New Age is good mainly when it's acoustic with more classical & jazz influences
Jazz isn't bad, Chick Corea is great.
Industrial and gansta rap, rock, some pop, electronic.
too much to mention.

I'll add a link to my own music one day...

Yay! "Awe" is one of the greatest emotions in life =)

In awe - that deep, absorbing kind, where everything is beautiful and somehow clearer - you feel deeply Alive... As a piano player since 5 years old (and 16yrs now), I get that feeling a lot with music, so I'm glad you got a taste of it. Isn't it so... awesome?

LOL - if my NFish (enneagram Type 4ish) reveries annoy you, reader, then ignore me ^_^ BUT life is beautiful, and I want everyone to know how!

If any one composer could put you in awe, I'd expect it would be Bach... mind, considerably more than one have managed it. Mozart did it so often it became trite! I am actually kinda bored by Mozart now, a thing I never thought possible. But Beethoven... I have finally learned appreciation of the 5th Symphony, especially the last part. And the 9th, I actually got to sing once, in the chorus. To think I nearly passed it up because I was having anxiety attacks (I was expecting my first child. Now that she's 6, I know the anxiety was warranted). But I would have regretted it forever.

I have tried piano and can play with much practice, but it is not natural to me. And I got sick of those people who heard me practicing at church saying that I was so wonderful I'd be accompanying the hymns next. I told them I really wasn't that great as I was playing one of maybe 10 songs I knew and most of them were not as well learned. But they thought I was being humble. Duh. If I think I'm good at something, I practically agree with someone paying me a compliment.

No, I've gone over to tin whistle, it's more my speed. Very easy to play.

Bach, really? His mastery of musical language and music theory is impressive when you analyze his works, but for me it's often too... 'by the rules', too formally restricted. I'm sure there are exceptions, but I can't remember ever being surprised when listening to Bach =P Anybody's welcome to prove me wrong ^_^

PS: Yeah - if piano's not natural, spend valuable time elsewhere.

Wow! Finally, a kindred soul.

I'm also a pianist. Been playing since I was 5, and I'm 16 now. If I was one of those Loony-Lovegood-conspiracy-theorist types, I would say there's obviously a cosmic connection. But I'm not, so I won't. wink.gif

Do you play classical piano? I do. My favorite period is the Romantic one - Chopin, Brahms, maybe late Beethoven. I agree with you about Bach - his music seems a bit mechanical to me. I'm also a 5w4 Enneagram type, and I'm firmly convinced that the 4 part is comprised solely of my affinity for the piano. My NF tendencies come out ONLY when I play piano. I'm planning to major in music.

As for listening to music, I can listen to quite a bunch of styles... some pop and a little bit of rock are okay, as long as they're melodic and a little bit rhythmic. Of course, I also love classical, jazz, and ragtime. My favorite composer to listen to is Mozart. I don't quite know why I like to listen to Mozart but I prefer to play Chopin. Maybe I just haven't listened to enough Chopin.

PS: Yeah - if piano's not natural, spend valuable time elsewhere.

I didn't say anything about surprising. And you've got to remember, music largely eludes me in all but the most basic respects as regards the creation of it. There is in my brain a place that does not seem to be accessible to me. It's a little scary as I find myself creeping up closer around the edges of the blackness of it. I always figured anything I couldn't learn was only forbidden me by my own will and unwillingness to struggle with the subject matter, but I now begin to think there is some part of my mind that is blocked by powers beyond my control. This is because things that seem like they should be very simple are a battle every time I face them. I cannot work out basic math without a struggle unless I've memorized the problems from repeated use. I can't visualize anything I haven't seen before; even if I have the components before me, I can't imagine it. I can't create a plot. I have been working on a book, and the plot is slowly evolving, but I repeatedly get caught up in tiny details and lose the big picture every time I try to work on or tell about the plot.

And music is a mystery. So from where I stand, the very fact that I can appreciate Bach enough to like him is a surprise and a wonder. Perhaps there is a safety in it for someone who has been denied by her very design the ability form a cohesive order in life. I must borrow my structure. Guys like Liszt and Debussy and their contemporaries often frustrate me.

Posted by: relaxo Feb 17 2004, 02:01 PM
I like Bach because his stuff is structured sounding. I don't like his choral stuff though.

Posted by: icedcooly Feb 21 2004, 08:48 PM
Well, I love so many different kinds of music, I'll just list a few of my favorite CD's to give a general idea:

Geogaddi by Boards Of Canada
1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours by Green Day
Here Comes Trouble: A Decade of Drum n Bass mixed by Friction, Fresh, and Fabio
97 Octane mixed by Dieselboy
Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles
What's The Story Morning Glory? by Oasis
Simple Things by Zero 7
The Grey Album mixed by DJ Dangermouse + Jay Z--a fantastic (and illegal, noone is allowed artistic access to the Beatles collection--you can download it online) mix of The Black Album by Jay Z with The White Album by The Beatles.
Billy Joel Greatest Hits (all 3 of the CD's)

I'm going to give up trying to list all my favorite CD's, I also listen to Ambient, Jungle, Trance, House, then some 80s New Wave, then music from the 60s and 70s like Gordon Lightfoot and Joni Mitchell, then some Motown. And I'd like to get more into some modern "classical" I guess you'd call it, I only ever hear bits and peices of this stuff on the radio and would love to find out who some of the composers are--if anyone can tell me any, that'd be great--and I like some dissonant sound with fantastic spacey harmonies (I wish I had taken more music theory). I like some Jazz too, mostly the "cool" type (as oppose to the "hot" type), once again I wish I could remember some names. I'm pretty young, so I don't get much exposure to this stuff.

Hi, I just noticed your post, I'm 19 and I've been playing piano since I was 7. Unfortunately, I didn't start taking ADD medication until I was 17 and by the time I was 15/16 and was expected to be practicing for 3 hours a day, I decided to quit. I wanted to study some jazz, but never got around to it, other things were holding my interest I suppose. So, I admire you, I love music and I know I have a talent for it, I will pick up the sax next year in University.

My favorite composer is Debussi, but I'm also going to start looking into some of the contemporary music made around the 50's and 60's, I believe. I've only heard bits and pieces on the radio from time to time.

I'm also sort of an NF, there was only a 4% difference between my T/F score.

Oh dear, conspiracies galore =)

Re. Bach: I tend to prefer structure with surprises, or with emotional sustenance. That's why I test almost-F, I guess!

icedcooly: Would you then consider yourself an INXP or INT(F)P? 'Curious.

Re. classical music: I'm trained classically, yep - but I like to play it much more than listen to it *hm* My musical tastes for listening are broad, but I can listen to a single CD or song over and over... and over... again without getting tired of them. My parents sometimes comment on how much I can listen to the same few songs constantly, until I finally completely understand them (and have them memorized, lol) and the freshness wears off. Each time I really listen it seems like I can resonate with the music [introverted sensing?] a little deeper.

It's cool that you're both doing music in college =) I might minor in piano and/or learn the violin.

2:30 - time to practice! ~Oddy

PS: Oh and one modern composer I really like is Muczynski happy.gif I play some of his preludes... VERY dissonant, it's lovely!

Posted by: icedcooly Feb 22 2004, 02:50 AM
Odyssey, I tried to find what the 'X' in the type code meant, and no page could give me an answer. What would be the difference between an INF(T)P and an INxP?
The only answer I can give you right now is that I think I'm more Thinking than Feeling, but only slightly so. I'm able to empathize with others, but I find it very awkward to talk about feelings, often because I can't find the words. I also look at situations very objectively, including those that arise from a relationship, where I guess it would be more helpful to "feel" things out.

Tim: He's really modern (he may even still be alive! b.1929), so there aren't many recordings. Also, absence may be due to KaZaA being teen/young-adult and mainstream-culture based. I.e. Muczynski isn't exactly a household name... for perhaps the same reason as Cziksentmihalyi? =)

Icedcooly: Oh sorry you spent the time looking, X is just a mostly-informal designation for half-and-half on a certain preference. To me and people fairly deeply interested in MBTI, INT(F)P means slightly but notably more T than F, and INXP means almost flatly 50-50. Yeah, from what you say it sounds like you are more T than F.

LOL it would be interesting if X meant zero on both traits...

Feeling preference: You have no feeling. In fact, you are purely cold-hearted. Please don't be my boss anytime in... my next dozen future reincarnations.
Thinking preference: You have no thinking. Your life is purely an animal existence with minimal prefrontal brain cortex activity. At least you're lucky enough to have a simple, comprehensible life.
Designation: X. Incapable of interpreting any information you perceive, you seem incapable of coming to a conclusion on anything more complex than fight-or-flight. Good luck, Odyssey.

I absolutely Love Bob Dylan, he has a key to my soul, and knows how to open it like no other artist. He is my favorite above all others.

However, I like almost every kind of music, bar three types, and grew up with classic rock, and my favorites are:

Bob Dylan (Everything)
The Who (Love Rain on Me, and almost everything else)
Grateful Dead (Ripple, Hell in a Bucket, Uncle Johns band, and much more)
Donovan (Pebble, Mellow Yellow)
Taj Mahal (Cakewalk into town, Corinna, Annies Lover, Fishin blues).
Celtic music, Boogie, Blues, Reagae, Bluegrass, Folk, Classical guitar, flute and piano
Ella Fitzgerald (Mac the knife)
Louis Armstrong, Pete Fountain, and many many more I love Jazz.

I actually like many many musicians, and styles, but my least favorites are country, opera, & rap.

I can improvise on the piano, and flute, and like to turn poems into songs.

Here here. Although there are some particuliar songs here and there that are cool. "Baby got Back" comes to mind. smile.gif

I play bass, guitar, drums and remember enough trumpet and piano to think I could play them if a situation arised (and I had some practice time).

I've been playing in punk/hardcore bands since I was 13, so that's what's I own a lot of. But I'm pretty diverse - I played bass in my high school jazz band (got the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award my senior year), love listening to Creedence or Johnny Cash on my reel-to-reel, and would love to sit under my sister's baby grand (and zone out) while she played some Bach.

Lately I've been listening to a lot of Social Distortion, Bad Astronaut, Armchair Martian, and Hopesfall.

Can anyone here give me some melancholic or just down right depressing classical music?

I have some Bach and a little Mozart, but it just doesn't fit my mood. I was listening to A Perfect Circle yesterday, 2 songs in imparticular all day. When I went to bed last night, the lyrics keep floating through my head and I can't go to sleep. However, when I am listening to classical music repeatedly, I am finding, when I go to sleep, the music drifts me off into other worlds full of landscapes and beauty and help me drift off into unconsciousness.

My favorite types of music are rock, r'n'b, soul and folk... I particularly like rock of the sixties and 70s

I dont really like : heavy metal, country, rap except some underground hip hop artists who have something meanuingful to say and who are creative like K-OS, Razcals, I do like some of Missy's songs.

My favorite musicians are:
India.Arie
Erykah Badu
Remy Shand
The Beatles
Bob Dylan
Blood sweat and tears
Don Mclean
Billy Joel
The Rolling Stones
Al Green
Otis Redding
Janis Joplin
Jimi Hendrix

Generally speking I like artists who have good lyrics and/or can sing their heart out (like Joplin, Green and Redding). I like songs that have a little melancolic/ sad tone but at the same time have hope in them... (not just the lyrics but alos just the tone of the music).

Some of my favorite songs:
-Piano Man/Billy Joel
-American Pie/Don Mclean
-Wild world/Cat Stevens
-try a little tenderness/Otis Redding
-Me and Bobby McGee
and many others...

Im learning to play guitar... I played piano for a year but it wasn't really "natural" for me: I had to practice alot to come to descent results and the songs I played where quite simple... I prefer pop guitar! smile.gif

Alice In Chains - I relate to their music really well. I'm not into drugs or heroin. To me, heroin is a metaphor for person's demons he or she maybe battling at any given time.

Audioslave
The Doors
Led Zeppelin
Jimi Hendrix
Pink Floyd
Enya
U2
Jethro Tull
Sting
Stone Temple Pilots
Pearl Jam
Lots of Classical
Pretty much anything except country and rap (well, sometimes even those too, but don't tell anyone).

Geez. Div56, I hurt my abdomen when I was scrolling down reading your post.
Well, here's my contribution:

Kraftwerk, Nine Inch Nails, some David bowie (He's a true artist), Hendrix, everything Hippy (My Parents), Almost everything classical, almost nothing in rap (Except Outkast, because they're fun), Misfits, Emperor, Most jazz (I want go away with Norah Jones), of course Al Green, Art Of Trance, Aphex Twin, Nirvana, ATB, Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, Moby, Fatboy Slim, The Future Sound of London, also, friends and I would all sit around and laugh while listening to Cannibal Corpse (I don't know if that counts, and no, there weren't any drugs involved, just lot's of caffine[Drug?] and a group of nerds rolling twenty-sided dice and telling stories intp/glasses.gif ).

In addition, opera was mentioned earlier, I would enjoy a live one, but listening to it the car would make me pull my hair out. The same with Kabuki, if one would listen to that in their car unsure.gif .

Oops, almost forgot to mention Irish folk: Finbar and Eddie, and the Chieftans.

I love music of all kinds..... it really depends on the mood that I am in though. When melancholly, I will usually listen to New Age, especially Susan Ciani.
Ironically, I usually will drive in silence. I have thought about themes for me as INTP....... "The Logical Song" and when deciding to leave a relationship in the past, 10cc's "I'm Not In Love".

At this moment, I'm listening to my favorite band: Talking Heads "Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)"

Otherwise:
- "Portrait of Tracy" Jaco Pastorious
- "Hyperballad" Bjork
- "Frosti" Bjork, an instrumental with just a music box.
- "They Threw Me Out of Church" Wesley Willis

I like most kinds of music, it's easier to list stuff I don't like.

Classical, commercial pop, rap music (beastie boys and a few other excepted from this rule) and I have special hatred reserved for Britney Spears (and her MTV clones) and those Idol/popstars TV shows... and most things on MTV.

All depending on mood I like different stuff.

I've got some Emperor, I like them so far. Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, good stuff. Gwar, umm, still checking them out.

I signed up to emusic.com before they changed their download policies and I ended up with 3000 songs for about $60. So I'm still listening to everything 8 months later. emusic.com still has good pricing, I'd sign up again when I get through all these songs.

and get perfect quality mp3s,even if it crashes, the mp3s are untouched.

I used to be into Black Metal.. the only Black Metal artist I really liked was Burzum and maybe a little bit of Incantation. Currently I am primarily into electronica... it's just that I haven't bought any new CD's in a long time so I'm getting extremely bored of the albums I have. I really enjoy Deep Dish but I am getting sick of their stuff right now so I need to get more albums by them.

I like a lot of metal. My favorite style is the "gothenburg style". I like melody with gruff vocals. But I have lots of metal ranging from death metal to thrash to classic to just plain weird. I like some black metal but never got into much of it. I can't stand the raw (aka tr00) black metal. I like some of the borderline stuff quite a bit though, like early arcturus or late immortal.

Though most of my collection is made up of metal, I have a pretty wide range of styles. Classic rock, stoner rock, prog rock, 50s pop, classical, grunge, bluegrass, and so on. I can be very picky about my music but I like anything that sounds interesting, but my rules for that are arbitrary.

Doesn't matter to me. I care more about the way vocals sound than what they're singing about. In fact, I don't even have to understand or relate to the lyrics to enjoy the music.

I agree, I often listen to music in foreign languages with little or no knowledge of what it's about. It's aout how it sounds, not what they say. In fact, I'll listen to two minutes of song that I hate just to get to a vocal that I really enjoy.

My friends make fun of me for downloading Chinese hip hop or German death metal ... but it just sounds so cool.

I like a lot of music (these days, I find I am listening to a lot of classic or prog rock from the 70s, plus what I would call "smart 80s pop or prog rock" ie stuff like Men at work, Yes, Big Country, David Bowie, Police, Asia, Early 80s Genesis, Outfield...). But there are plenty of other honorable mentions, too many to list here.

HOWEVER: my all-time favorite is RUSH! Such fantastic musicianship, such great songs, such great lyrics..... such PASSION and PRECISION in their playing.
My favourite song of theirs is "Subdivisions".... about a misfit dreamer who grows up in a cookie cutter subdivision and can't wait to leave... not that that's about *me* or anything! biggrin.gif

Stuff I listen to very little (but occasionally): jazz (seems sort of formless and pointless to me, lacks the focused precision that I like), classical (it lacks the raw power of rock music, too polite), techno (yawn, I like *songs* played by *musicians*), 90s and 2000s music (I've heard my share of it, most of it is shallow and mediocre compared to the great giants of the 70s and early 80s IMHO).

Stuff I actively despise: country (banal, bland, unintellectual, everything I despise in music and in life), rap (except for some old Public Enemy, but most of it seems more like clear evidence of social breakdown than art that I would want to listen to.)

Darren

I don't really listen to rap but I know there are some great spoken word rap artists out there.. if you've heard poetry slams then you would like spoken word .. i'm going to trail off.. I'm tired.

I don't like hip hop either but I do like eminem.

It all has to do with the sound for me. I don't like talking in a song, it just sounds off to me, not enjoyable - so I don't like much hip hop.
I don't like the sound of many brass instruments like the trombone and saxophone, they grate on my nerves, so I don't listen to much jazz. I also don't like the sound of a screeching electric guitar solo, so Hendrix and the like are out as well.

But start playing a fiddle around me and I wont be able to stop my feet from doing the jig.

I used to think that about country. Then I discovered alt.country. The country music you won't hear on the radio.

Oh and I agree about rap. Public Enemy was the best.

OK... I think I can relate to that... I have to warn you I am terrible at telling music types apart though... I love scandinavian metal groups. Not *only* scandinavian, but it seems that I find my favourite type of metal performed basically by scandinavian groups... I like melody with gruff vocals as well; and I like that weird, goth stuff...

On lyrics I will also agree with Amy... I care more about how the vocals sound than for what they mean... maybe because music serves basically as a backround.

Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring by Bach is one of my all time favorites. You've got to here it on acoustic guitar - awesome. My husband plays it when he's practicing.

hey, some of you actually have good taste in music...

some of you, like Darren, sound like morons

right now i'm listening to the Clash. earlier i was listening to Bob Dylan and Lou Reed. soon i'll be listening to Ennio Morricone's "The Good the Bad and the Ugly" sdtrk

i can't really answer the original question right now, but i 'd like to respond to metimbo's question " Can anyone here give me some melancholic or just down right depressing classical music?"

i recommend Albinoni's "Adagio"

Celtic Folk, Industrial Metal, Bulgarian Womens Choir, Swans, Prokofiev, House music, Hip-hop, Funk, Noise

While my taste is extremely broad, I've found that if I have the desire to listen to music I will either listen to something I've recorded or try to record something new. This reminds me of something from an INTP description I read somewhere (sorry I cant quote it directly) which said that INTP's will listen to something that matches their emotional state, and if they hear music that clashes with their emotions they will feel an uncomfortable dissonance. This is in accord with the impliable nature of the INTP's feeling side; someone with differentiated feeling might actually experience an evolution of transformation in their feeling by listening to something that clashes in this way.
And what better way to listen to music that matches your state of mind than to make it yourself- I have on occasion felt that music made by someone other than myself has an unpleasant alien quality to it.

"...it is at least fairly clear that the formula 'Externalize all within and shape everything without' is the ideal of the conscious attitude of the introvert."

How intelligent, a comeback. rolleyes.gif

But I find, as I've stated elsewhere, I like the use of ellipses at the end of a post, as it leaves so much to the imagination. Thanks for the laugh. smile.gif

Thanks

I love them, people always look at me strangely when I tell them SandG are my favourite all time music artists.

But I have never thought of it as an INTP thing because my mother was a folk dancer in her prime, danced for the queen and everything, so I chalked up my love for SandG to her influence.

My wife has liked them for ages and go me to listen to them. In fact, we saw them in concert last winter. Can't quite hit all the notes anymore, but still very entertaining.

My sister-in-law got a 2 CD "best of" for Christmas last year and I was jealous.

I'm still trying to convince the guys we should cover "Sound of Silence."

Posted by: paladinoflunaria Jun 28 2004, 05:26 AM
This is very difficult so I'll just list a few artists I like. Perhaps when I have more time I will elaborate.

Enya, Kitaro, Secret Garden, Amethystium, Gaelic Storm, David Arkenstone, Yanni, Mythos, Nobuo Uematsu, Crash Test Dummies, Deep Forest, Masaharu Iwata, Hitoshi Sakimoto, Koji Kondo, Simon & Garfunkel, Astral Projection, Collective Soul, Kumi Tanioka, Chuck Wild, etc.

I like celtic music and string quartets a good deal, but I listen to many things.

I'm surprised more people haven't listed Radiohead- I thought they would have been a regular on this thread (I kind of consider them my daily bread).

Anyways, here are some of my favorites. Radiohead, Lamb, Portishead, DJ Shadow, John Digweed, Tortoise, Jagga Jazzist, Mogwai, Back Off Cupids, Sigur Ros, Basement Jaxx, Squarepusher, Modest Mouse, U.N.K.L.E., Yann Tierson, Byork, Some David Bowie (he's a genius, but I can't stand listening to too much of him), Dave Matthews and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Posted by: The_Architect Jul 11 2004, 01:23 AM
and Boards of Canada.

and Broken Social Scene.

Posted by: Horger Jul 11 2004, 02:54 AM
so here are some bands I like.

Machine Head
Pink Floyd
David Bowie (Bowie has to be one of my all time favorite artists)
Radiohead
Pearl Jam
Soundgarden
Stone Temple Pilots
White Zombie (Rob Zombie sucks lately, but old white zombie is great)
In Flames
Faith No More
Children of Bodom
The Cure
Type O Negative
The Smashing Pumpkins
Nine Inch Nails
Bob Marley
Queen
R.E.M.
The Sisters of Mercy
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Slayer
Sting
Suicidal Tendencies
Van Halen cool.gif
Filter
The Misfits
Danzig
The Beastie Boys

That's about all I can think of. I have pretty wide musical tastes and can appreciate alot of different music, but for casual listening I stick to rock/metal and subgenres. I pretty much grew up on Nine Inch Nails, STP, soundgarden, etc... because my brother really influenced my musical tastes. Most people my age don't seem to appreciate late 80's - mid 90's bands because they weren't exposed to them. I think I was 8 when I started listening to some of this crazy shit. Coincidentally, that's when I started masturbating.
